Fluxbox show the desktop

Ok, so I've added desktop icons to fluxbox. Now all I need is a "show desktop" button on the bar. Is there an easy way to do this? A tray icon that does it would do it, but I can't find anything like it.

even easyer solution
just swich to another desk top ( you know there are 4 of them i think just swich to another one it will have the same icons but all the programs will be in the last desktop

never open a window...then you will always have the desktop!

I like worker201 has the easiest idea. activate multiple desktops, then you can pick or choose from your task bar. However if you specifically want to get to that particular desktop...I would imagine you'll just have to shrink the window...

Haha, but still. The point is it helps some people. It's one of my habits and since there's a button in other wms I not the only one. You open stuff compulsively, then you want to get to your icons, or in the case of flux, just merely right clicking to get to the menu - and that's the only way to get to program links on the gui, but there's a bunch of stuff in the way so you have to go and minimize everything one by one. There idea and habit I have is to open whatever you want at will, that's why a permanent menu on a panel is the best. Fluxbox doesn't have your program menu there. And as far as multiple workspaces, Yes, flux does have them. By default there's the usual 4, but even workspaces run out of space if you go around opening stuff on each one. And having to switch desktops slows you down. A command to minimize everything, is there such a thing? I like the idea of setting that to the windows key.

Oh ... I see now what you are talking about ... I think. Well the solution is easy for me:

1) I don't use icons ... only the menu
2) I change the apps dimensions so there is a bit of a space at the top or left or right of the windows so you can right-click and bring up a menu quickly

If you were wondering ... right-click on a window title > Remember > check Dimensions and Position ... this causes the window to be brought up in the same place with the same dimensions every time leaving a bit of room around the edges will let you access the menu anytime. To edit the window dimentions edit the ~/.fluxbox/apps config file.

It'll look something like this:

[app] (Gecko)
   [Dimensions] {938 739}
   [Position] (UPPERLEFT) {1 1}
[end]

Your dimensions are probably different ... and this is only the entry for Firefox.

Expose in Mac OSX does this real nicely.   Click one button to show the desktop, click one to show all open windows.  Move the mouse to hot corners if you don't like the keyboard.

Guess sometimes you have to shell out a couple bucks for the features you really want

you can add a key binding to ~/.fluxbox/keys for the 'showdesktop' action.

fluxbox is awesome cause its so easy to configure with just vi.

personally if I want start a new application I go to a new desktop. I make Alt-F* desktop shortcuts.

Or for an instant menu you can bind RootMenu to a key ... for example mine is:

Mod1 w :RootMenu

pressing 'Alt' 'w' will bring up the menu. Also, it's 'ShowDesktop' ... I think the case is important.

Is there any way to use a mouse button as a binding? I'm trying to add the ctrl-click feature for Linux PPC (since it's a single mouse button), but I haven't found anythign yet.

Not bad thanks. It's better than nothing. I just set it to ShowDesktop. The bad thing is it doesn't work with just a single key, does it? It has to be Alt+ letter? The windows key is the Multi_key, and that doesn't work either way. Works in XFCE though, so could I make it work by itself in this config?

edit: the Win key is supposively Mod4 but that's not working anyways. I guess I will just go with alt m, since comma doesn't work
edit: n'm comma works, and Multi_key is only the right windows key. I set it to Mod1 Multi_key :ShowDesktop - right next to each other.

Btw, as far as the comment of having shortcuts on the mac mouse. What a double edged sword. You lose the functionality of the buttons for anything else. That's not even worth it since you use the mouse buttons much more than needing to minimize everything.

You don't lose the functionality of any button. The function is binded to a specific combination of buttons, not to the buttons themselves. Ctrl-click would pop up a menu, while you would still be able to use ctrl in combination of other buttons.

Unless Ctrl is a mouse button that seems pretty goofy to me. But that's just me. If you have to press the keyboard might as well just put keyboard shortcuts.

Ctrl-click is the standard replacement for right click on Macs, unless you have a two-button mouse (which I don't because that Mac doesn't have USB),
