Weird problem with my Thinkpad. Yes, it's running Windows. It is set to go into standby mode when I shut the lid. When it goes into standby, it gives a system beep (not a Windows sound), and the standby indicator light goes on. When you open the lid, you hear a system beep, the standby indicator light goes off, and the computer is back to normal. It requires a password to resume from standby (Windows "security"). This is normal activity.

Now, since I got my network set up, the following happens once per day: there is a system beep, the standby indicator light goes out, and the optical drive spins up. Approximately 30 seconds later, the system beeps again, and the standby light comes back on. This is happening without me touching the computer in any way.

I remind you that the computer's MAC address is blocked by the router, but the IP address is not. I'm wondering if some computer out there is knocking on the door to say hello in a way that the router is letting it through, only to be stopped by the password requirement. I know lots of software likes to call home and talk about me behind my back, especially Windows.

When the computer's lid is shut, I want it to STFU. Besides the security risks, that system beep is loud as hell, and cannot be adjusted. Usually it happens in the middle of the night, and it wakes me up. In fact, I just realized what is happening today, because it happened while I was sitting at the desk using the other computer.

Any suggestions? Seen this problem before?

It might be worth a poke around the Device Manager or BIOS to see if it has a Wake-On-Lan ability

'Wake On LAN' was disabled in the BIOS. But 'Flash Over LAN' and 'Internal Network Option ROM' were enabled. They have been disabled, because I would never want to do either. I also excluded the network card as a bootable device, just in case. We'll see if that does it.

Update: changing those BIOS settings did not solve the problem. Further ideas appreciated.

Try making the keyboard and mouse not have control over stand-by or hibernate.

You think that somehow the mouse is moving, causing the machine to wake up for a few minutes? That's a pretty fucked-up definition of sleeping. Well, it's Windows, I guess anything but awesome is possible.

Update - more info:

Today I was using both the Mac and the PC, and I had the PC's shared documents folder mounted as a samba share on the Mac. Before leaving for class, I shut the lids on both, putting both into sleep mode. When I returned from class, I opened the lid on the Mac, which still had the samba share mounted. Immediately, the PC tried to wake up. This leads me to suspect that the PC is attempting to respond to some sort of network stimulus. In this particular case, it's like the PC wanted to be ready to share data with the Mac. On other occasions, it must be the router polling it or something, I have no idea.

The system beep on Thinkpads can be disabled through a Windows utility that comes with the machine. My dad's Z61m has this, and we turned it off. It's way too fucking loud.

Unfortunately, I can't remember what utility it was, only that it was IBM's and that it came with the computer. Might have been their custom power management app.

There's a place in the BIOS where you can disable the system beeps. I could do that, but I'd rather find out why I'm getting beeps at all.

The machine is designed to beep when woken up. That particular beep can be disabled on its own.

Yes, but why is it waking up? It's not mouse movement, it's not Wake-on-LAN. Is it this damn router?

I'm wasn't referring to mouse movement at all. Lots of keyboards and mice have a "get-out-of-sleep-mode" function built in, even if they don't have such a button.
My Logitech mouse (3 buttons) sent out wake-up signals to my laptop, you need to disable that function.

Can you duplicate it? If so It may be because of network activity, even though WOL is disabled. In the device manager, under network adapter properties or maybe even some configuration utility by IBM, there should be a way to have the system power the Ethernet controller down during sleep
