Supercomputers of the world

This interesting graphic shows the top 500 super computers in the world.  It also uses clever graphics for pattern analysis, organizing the info by location, purpose, etc.  Of special interest to this forum is the striking info about what OS these computers are running.

Not surprisingly Linux dominates, probably because scientists like it being open source so easy to customise.

It links to another interesting article.

So if you really want power, the best way is to steal it rather building your own supercomputer. I wonder if a rogue state will build a botnet to help them to design better nuclear weapons?

I don't think stealing it is the best way actually, botnets are pretty unreliable, and to have them doing computation would easily alert the people using the machines to the fact that something isn't right.

Maybe Obama could use botnets to create 'aggregate demand' as a stimulus package for computer hardware. The bots could just wastefully chew up processing power and people would upgrade, stimulating the economy. Sounds just as productive as all of his plans. How do you get a job in that Administration?
