Yes, you heard right.

I've placed an order for the "dual" 2.0Ghz G5 alumitower. Quite excited . . .

And I only put down $500.00. How, you ask? It's called "Having a Best Friend Work at Infinity Loop, Cupertino, as a 'Tier 2' Tech Support guy. . ."

(No idea what "Tier 2" means, except DISCOUNTS).

So the header of this article is misleading; I haven't acquired anything, yet. But I did toy with the 1.6Ghz G5 at our local Apple retailer.

This forum topic is REALLY about the rumors that Apple might bring to the surface a new incarnation of "neXt" . . . the company it bought in 1997 -- upon whose O.S. OSX is built.

It's a sort of "convoluted" maneuver . . . I will have to consult my friend to ask if this quantity is even remotely plausible.

$500 covers the cost of a single dual-processor 2.0Ghz tower, with 1GB ddr. No monitor*, keyboard, mouse, or speakers to take advantage of the G5's inbuilt optical audio.

I don't know about a 1.6 . . . never occured to me to investigate one. I'll do so and post appropriate answers.

I got my hands on the 1.6. I ended up actually getting hurt on price. I finished up with the same specs as the 1.8 model, but it was about $2800. I had to have standard PCI slots, and therefore, didn't have much choice.

I guess I could have gotten that $1200 G4...

ya... I don't think i could send 500 bucks to someone unless it was through my credit card (paypal or something similar) and there was a contract (just a quick contract that says I will get a 1.8G5 if I send u 500) Then if you don't follow through i have documentation to prove that u screwed me and I will just not pay the 500 on the credit card bill (and send the bank a letter of course)
