Contrary to popular belief, BeOS did not die with its aquisition by Palm.

The zeta project (http://www.yellowyab.com) is making an OS that is the next generation of BeOS (it will be commercial). It is made from the ground up I believe and it will be binary compatible with BeOS 5 apps.

BeOS MAX Edition (http://www.beosmax.org) and BeOS DevEd (http://www.beosonline.com) are BeOS distros based on BeOS Personal Edition 5 which include all patches needed to run BeOS on modern architectures.

Finally the OpenBeOS project (http://www.openbeos.org) is making strides at creating its own distro

Nothing is free, even linux. SuSE only gives out an evaluation of its product as a free download, Lindows does not give out ANY free trial, you have to buy it.

Both BeOS Max and BeOS DevEd are based on the Personal Edition of BeOS which was Free, therefore these guys have no right to sell their product, it MUST be free! Also this is the way BeOS looked since its inception in 97

As for Zeta, people can work on it, it is not free, it will cost something, these guys have not used any BeOS code as far as I know (it would be illegal to do so), and they have invested a lot of time and effort to make an OS that looks like, behaves like, and is a sucessor to BeOS, and can run all BeOS apps without any modification, that is qute a feat. If you do not like it tough

And no, we wouldn't prefer that everything was a linux, but rather that everything was Free.

Lindows isn't free software and doesn't claim to be, and Suse similarly contains non-free software. Other distros like Red Hat, Debian etc. are free - both in terms of cost, (to which I believe you are referring), and freedom (which is more important.)

I am an avid mac user actually under which I have Rhapsody, Nextstep, openstep, OS/2, qnx, amigaOS, GEM, linux, and BeOS running under emulation in MacOS X

Sorry to blow your bubble, SuSE does give out it's software free it does not give .iso out, you have to perform a live install, and yes it does use proprietary code, from codeweavers if I remeber correctly, which might explain why it's not what I use. Lindows should be providing all code derived from it's use of Debian as its linux base, if the proprietary code is based on GPLd code than it is breaking the terms of it's license. When people talk about free round here they generally mean free as in open source (and preferably GPLd). That is most peoples guide line. Personally I will not use any proprietary code because there is nothing it can do, that I need, that can't be done on an open source Operating System. So in that respect any work on BeOS is a total waste of time.

That is not to decry the skills and work of those involved with the project, but I don't need another proprietary Operating System. Now if it came out as Open source under a good Open Source license, then that would change the picture considerably. But I no longer use programs, Operating Systems and indeed any form of software that is not at the very least Open source in its entirety, meaning all the source is available. It is the major reason I have not brought a MAC yet, until they go completly OSS on their OS I'm not interested (oh and they have to remove all the Microsoft crap, and M$ can have no payment of money or services from Mac for any reason). There is no need. no requirement to use closed source software. And as it is a major security risk, and no closed source company meets my basic requirements for patching bugs, I cannot understand why anyone still uses it.

has admiral never heard of the hundreds of linux, bsd and even dos based operating systems out there that are totally free? the best examples of these (red hat, mandrake, freebsd and many more) are better (more stable, more secure et c) than most proprietary systems.

and i think admiral already knows the difference between free as in lunch and free as in freedom, or he wouldn't have responded by talking about free software in response to a comment about proprietary software.

and it really does look like kde1!

I know the difference.
One thing before I continue. MAC does not mean macintosh, MAC is a networking term. Mac = Macintosh.

Apple makes hardware, just like sun, and they have a proprieraty, yet open source system, that runs on that hardware almost seamlessly, something that Solaris and MacOS have been doing for some time now, unlike M$ Windex, and certain linuxen that are a pain in the arse to set up.

I DO know about all the free linux, BSD and DOS OSes that exist. I Frequent this site, linux.org and Freeos.com, and as a matter of fact have a long list of FreeOSes which I have downloaded and installed at some point or another on my spare PC (which only sees third party OS action for the past 2 years).

Finally, LETS NOT TURN THIS THREAD INTO LINUX AND HOW GREAT IT IS BECAUSE ITS "FREE" .... the point is not to bash other OSes here, the point is to look to Alternatives to Windex that work for each one of us.
