ok, after about 2 hours of trying to setup wireless networking in windows2k (ended up having to dl a program: PCTEL to get it to recognise the network), i want to set it up in linux (redhat 9, as stated in the subject).

i have a netgear wireless pc card, and netgear seems to support linux, but redhat couldn't connect by default--this is where i start needing help. i have no idea how to install drivers in linux.

there are two tar.gz files, and something else. i can give you the filenames if you need them

what are the filenames? what proc do you have? is it x86 based?

I'm sure that it is. The guy also has Win2K on the comp, so I think it is safe to say that it is a x86 machine.

anyways... the .tar.gz files are likely source code for you to compile, if you dont know how feel free to ask... i dont want to explain it if u do. just pick the file that's description fits you the best and compile it.

If it contains a binary... try executing it.

Usually a readme is included in there anyways...

ok, first: it is x86. i have 2 computers: both have win2k and redhat9 (only the laptop is wireless right now though)

there are 3 files in the linux subdirectory of the cd though:

an install guide, sorta:

i wish they had a binary.

when i first tried to ./configure one of the files, it said it couldn't find the source directory or something...

i would welcome any help...i'm stll kinda new to linux cause i just started using it again.

OK sorry i did not see this sooner but i may be able to help alot. I also am on wireless and use linux. I run Red Hat 8 though. I have set up wireless in RH9 with ease though. First i would need to know if the chip is prism2 based? If it is i would goto Linux Wirless Drivers and check out the readme and FAQ. In the FAq the is an address for a site that has rpm's which will make your life much easyer then trying to compile from source.

It should say in the manual that came with it. But if you give me the exact model number and such i can look it up online for you.

i bought it from my cousin, so i dno't have the manuel, but:

Netgear, MA401 802.11b

From what i can tell it is a prism2 based card. That is good. That means the linux-wlan.com drivers will work for it. linux-wlan download for the readme and faq. You can try to compile and install the source if you are daring. I have never gotten the source to work witrh DHCP so i cant help much if you do that. But i can give you a nice little site where they have rpms available. wirless rpms. You will need to find out what kernel you have installed and base your selection on that. They have good directions there to follow but it ends up being just rpm -ivh kernel-restoffilename to install them.
