They've fixed this bug in XP, the contents of these files is removed when you delete the files the old fashoned way using Internet explorer, see here for details.

The Microsoft Genuine Advantage ActiveX controls sneak down the .dat files on your system to see what warez sites you have been to if the checks failed and hopefully bust pirates. However this information is also obtained halfway by the United States government to find terrorist links/URI.

Why are ActiveX controlls a good this when they allow viruses to be installed and porn sites to rip people off by making their modems dial premium rate numbers?

Erm, IE7 warns you about every ActiveX control you encounter by default, and so does IE6 with SP2 when I think about it. And on Windows 2003 Internet Explorer owns Firefox security wise.

But the average windows user is stupid and just hits [Yes] [OK] [Agree] without reading anything.

And owning firefox security-wise, just because they DISCOVERED more exploits in it, doesn't mean it's more or less secure. It just proves someone found more exploits. And those figures were based on those that the vendor acknowledged. There were actually about 30 found for internet explorer iirc, but Microsoft said 27 of them weren't serious. Mozilla said that 18 of the 20 were. Who'se being more honest here?

The links at the top of this thread did not work for me...how do you find the really hidden files in 2000? I have that on two machines and XP on another...I already saw that XP deletes them but I am lost on the 2000...
