Take your lithium and the voices will go away. Wear earmuffs with earplugs...then you won't have to listen to it. Ahhh, just think, in a couple more weeks, you will go to work in the morning and immediately upon sitting down, your workplace will be filled with the start up sound of Vista from all directions.

Actually, my next job might be in Angola.  Does Windows 2.0 have a startup sound?

Making a wav file of something else and give it the same name as the official Vista wav and replacing the file might work. It might have to be the same number of bytes, or have the same md5 sum, depending on how anal Bill is about keeping it untouched.

Using external speakers set to mute on startup will solve the problem otherwise. My eMac doesn't ding at me on startup because I mute the speakers most of the time.

If MS doesn't want you to change the sound on vista, they won't let you.  Remember, this is the palladiumified windows.  You don't even have root on it.  I have no difficulty believing that MS would use their DRM infrastructure to keep people from changing this wav file.

Even if they didn't, it will likely be registered as  in use by the winlogon process and unable to be changed unless you mount the partition under a separate OS.

Then again, they may decode to be total dicks about it and hardcode the sound into the software (no wav file to change).

Remember this is MS we are talking about.  "Where do you want to go today  (as long as it's ok with us and our REAL customers, the  RIAA and MPAA)?"

I remember working at the police station in the mornings. All the ladies would come in from the adjudications branch, and even though thier office was on the other side of the barrier wall (complete with bomb glass)...I could still hear thier windows 2k every morning. It was almost as if they coordinated the boot up, that big clunky sound 200 makes at the splash screen was just annoying...It also served as a reminder...1 our to go.
