Is that a Mac issue or an Office issue?  Sometimes it is hard to tell.

What version?  I have Office 04 and it's never told me to close anything to start.

To autoupdate, you open Word, then AutoUpdate, then quit Word. Autoupdate remains open and will then run correctly.
