PC PROBLEM PLEASE HELP

My 400MHz 384Ram 12GB HD with XP always freezes, Yes  I know Windows sux and so does my PC, This has been happening for a while since I had 98.2oo2,redhat,XP on this PC I recently Installed XP because my Linux kept fucking up, My PC always freezes nomatter what OS, I think its a HD problem because after everytime it freezes It says That The Primary HD wasnt found [ I hae one HD ] Any tips ? The HD is old but I havent  touched it and it cant be corrupted because b4 it freezes I hear a small click..

Help ?

it sounds like a corrupt filesystem.

install Windows and destroy all existing partitions, then recreate them, and format them fully, using FAT32 or NTFS.

that oughta do it.

or re-install Linux. what precisely was it doing?

I had deleted the partition many times its not a software problem I hear this click and 5 secs later my PC wont start and wen I try it says - <--that blinks in upper right corner or it says ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
on the whole screen switching the backroung from black to grey or it says Primary HD not found ?

OK, Drill a hole in the top...run an extension chorde through it, then put on a lamp shade...VIOLA...you still have a use for your puter!!!!

No really...Try this.

Use a disk that comes with your H/D.  All manufacturers make them bootable.  Follow it's instructions and be sure to tell it what kind of O/S you plan to put on it and let it format and set patitions.

The install your O/S and let it reset the partitions.

Goofy I know but I just fixed a buddies coomputer that way.  Usually when you hear that click...just say uh oh.  it is either an actual hard warez fowl up (yes sometimes they miss bad ones before they sell it) or the drivers are all fugged.  You may have not totally erased all data from all of those other O/S' you had on there and that would deffinately fug it up.  If you want more detailed info on what I did to fix my friends, then just message me.  If your systems a package deal the fix isn't quite so easy.

After formatting your drive, it whoudn't be a bad idee to use one of those programs to check if your drive is damaged.

I meant that

Every OS I have tried that I can relate to doesnt work because My PC Freezes at times

Sometimes on im my PC on XP or Linux and I hear this click, 2 seconds later my HD freezes, I restart it Says Primary HD not Found [ I have one HD ] Then I restart Again and I get this - <==| In the upper Right corner, If I restart a few More times I get the whole screen filled with this ^^^^^ In white text, and the BG Color Keeps Switching from Grey/Back every second....

Oh man.. I've heard that click before the comp freezes.  It was always bad news for me.
I seriously think your hard disk is dying.  Check /var/log/messages after a crash when you are running Linux.  It will probably show you an error message pertaining to your drive dying.

I'd suggest you backup any critical data right away, then run some serious surface scans, and by serious I mean over and over again for several hours.  IF in windows, you can use Scandisk.  In linux you can use badblocks... note badblocks shouldn't be used on mounted partitions so you might want to boot from a rescue disk.

I know its not really a problem for 400mhz Pentiums but make sure your computer has sufficient cooling.  I know a lot of old PC's don't have big hardware but you might need a better or a few more fans.

Try switching the power lead connector that you are using for your hard drive. The lead connector on it right now may have a short in it. It could also be a problem with the power input of the hard drive. That click you are talking about is probably your hard drive losing power and shutting off(which will cause your comp to lock up). The reason why it says no drive found when you hit reset is because the drive never powered back on.

I've ran into this problem in the past a few times(on customer computers that were brought into the shop). One time it was being caused by the hard drive being on the same connector current as the front case fan(the drive was plugged in with the  splitter lead of the fan). After unplugging it from that connector and connecting it to a different lead on the PSU(one not plugged into a case fan) the problem was solved. Another time I encountered this and it ended up being a physical problem with the drive. I had to disassemble the drive and re-solder the power input source on the drive...and sure enough the problem was fixed(it was being caused by 1 pin on the controller board that was somehow broken loose).

Anyways, if putting the drive on a different power connector doesn't work you probably have a physical problem with your drive. You can either attempt to fix the solder of the power input pin(s) to controller board(if you are brave enough to dis-assemble a hard drive) or you can buy a new drive/good used drive for the comp. Be warned, dis-assembling the drive and working with the solder may not solve the problem, if you see any burns or abnormalities(like a bubble in a circuit path) on the controller board of the drive it means that the board has a fried circuit and it really can't be fixed(it can be if you have the technical finess of fixing fried circuits on a circuit board...which is by no means easy for a person who doesn't know how to do it). If it comes down to a fried controller board on the drive you are best off to just replace the drive.

I fixed it by deleting all Partitions and Installing Knoppix (Yes You can install Knoppix to go console and type in knx-hdinstall, I think I fixed it, Hasn't crashed since!

Without any problems at all? I now people who did that and had one problem: it boots into runlevel 3. Of course any Linux guru can figure out that you need to start vi and edit inittab, but try to explain that to the newbie...

Come the hell on, we all know the easiest solution to fix this drive (before installing knoppix) was to  hit it with several rounds from a silenced handgun loaded with hollow point copkiller rounds. The HD is obviously possessed by what remains of XPee, and needs exorcised...

"Copkiller"  rounds usually refer to rounds designed to penetrate body armor.  Hollow point rounds are designed to expand on impact to maximize damage and thus are not suited for armor penetration.
