yeah. I don't think I've ever seen or heard her refer to her music as "punk". Closest I've seen is "skater punk". By adding the modifier, that *does* make it different.
Refalm is right in that MTV and the "US Music Industry", those halfwitted shiteaters that we love to hate. The same guys who want to destroy freedom of thought in the world for the sake of "ip", label her "punk".
I have a friend who works at Hastings in music, and he thinks I'm silly for ignoring "genres". But I just can't trust imbeciles like the asshats who run record companies to name music styles.
I also can't be arsed worrying about what style something is. It's either good, or bad.
Example: Sex Pistols = good
Blink 182 = bad
Chicago = good
J.Lo = bad
(horrible comparison!)
At least Avril writes her own music. She's part of the triumvirate of chick rockers who are trying to bring respect back to females in music by actually having talent. Avril, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton, along with some lesser players, are proving that people do like something other than Britney's fake boobs and voice that has more filters than my Strat.
