Windows XP is not that bad! (Please read entire message)

Or, you could use Windows 3.11
I don't remember that crashing at all! Certainly Windows 1.0 didn't!

3.11 crashed alot. W/o preemptive multitasking or protected memory there was a very good chance that a crashed program would force you to reboot.
Also, 3.11 had some memory leak issues that would force you to reboot every so often unless you had a 3rd party memory manager.
However, a 3.11 crash never FUBARed the OS (requiring a reinstall) unlike some Win 95 crashes I remember.
Interestingly enough, I don't remember Windows 1.0 crashing now that you mention it.

Well, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, I suppose. Or maybe not? :D

Call men ignorant If you want, but I have to ask.
What was Windows born from. I can't really imagine it being entirely original.

It got started with QDOS, which His Gatesness bought from Seattle Computing, which, in turn, ripped off CP/M. QDOS became MS-DOS, and then they slapped a GUI on top of it. This idea His Gatesness stole from Apple, which had gotten the idea from Xerox PARC.
It wasn't "original" at all. :D

Quick forward: I'm running XP Pro on an Inspiron 8200 P4 laptop...runs like a dream. I've crashed twice in six months, both times due to my video card drivers. I have very little reason to be terribly upset. HOWEVER...
M$ still blows.
Palladium is the devil, and I plan on switching to Linux (Probly RH 8 or so) this summer when I can have my comp down for long periods of time without losing schoolwork. I will be boycotting M$ products from this point forward, and I'm looking into Sun Office.
XP is uses so much memory, but I don't do that much stuff that is memory intensive, and since I have 512 mB, it doesn't bother me. However, the operating system alone SHOULDN'T suck 100 mB of memory.
Windows, as has been stated, was built on MS-DOS, which was a makeover on Q-Dos, which was basically Gary Killdall's CP/M with the HD drive letter changed to c, from a. the GUI came from the Apple Lisa, which came from the Xerox Alto, which, interestingly enough, was the first true networkable computer, complete with a technology that Xerox called ethernet. All this back in the mid 80s! Anyhow, sorry for the long post, but spread the word, M$ blows, and this Palladium will only make things worse. Intel isn't helping either, and their fascist Centrino is the first step toward total TCPA domination. Keep your PCs running smoothly, because soon you may not be able to buy a PC without Palladium technology!!!
