I know its a really good applications because I've used it. But is there anything out there that is comparable to it that is really cheap or free ?

I wouldn't really call The GIMP comparable as it lacks CMYK color support.

It is free though.

GIMP does support CMYK color now, and has for at least a couple months now.

Thats good. The last time i used GIMP, there was no native CMYK support.
