Http accounts in Outlook Express
« on: 8 June 2002, 06:44 »
Does anyone know of any clients OTHER than the dreaded Outlook Express which can access HTTP e-mail accounts?
I can't find any and it is the only reason I keep using OE - if anyone knows of any alternatives I would be extreamly grateful if thye would pass 'em on

Why not just use a Web Browser....
Get a @fuckclockcrew.zzn.net email and you
can just use POP3 for mail................

Thanks for such constructive replys! I ask a perfectly reasonable question and get abuse in return - well that's great.

My guess is that you will be hard pressed to find one for several reasons. What webmail providers are supported in your existing email reader (you didn't mention what service you use)? My guess would be hotmail only, but I could be wrong. The reason I say it would be hard to find one is because there are no RFCs or standards for web based mail servers like there are for POP and IMAP (that I am aware of). They all do it differently and they could change any time they like. That would be hell for any email client writer as every change made on the server would break the client. Now since Microsoft has control over the particular client and the hotmail servers they could implement an HTTP based service along with POP and/or IMAP and be able to coordinate changes between the server and client. For instance, I use IMP on my server for web based mail reading.  I would be willing to bet that your email client would not work with an IMP web mail server.  You didn't specify any of the server details. But POP and IMAP are standard across all servers. If your email client supports POP or IMAP it will work with *any* server that supports POP and IMAP.

If you know differently about an HTTP webmail standard I certainly would be interested in hearing it.

I'm surprised YaHoo hasn't changed their site to break OE from working since they recently stopped allowing free POP access. They want you to look at ads or pay for POP. Interesting...

you did not get abusive replies. X11 suggests you use a browser, then some dumbass posts, and a moderator edits it. I can only assume the post got edited because of it's offensive nature.

That's one reply, and one irrelevance. The reply was not abusive.

What do you expect anyway, on the fuckmicrosoft.com forums. welcom e to the forums and all that, but if you have a stick up your behind, then please do not come over all self righteous about it.

And that was not intended to be abusive, have a nice day!
