Operating Systems > Linux and UNIX
How could they do this to me?
lazygamer:
Well assuming the pro Linux arguments are true, you could conclude that:
1)Windows is only it's current size due to bloat, it could actually be much smaller.
2)Linux on the other hand, is as large if not larger, but crams in all sorts of non bloated stuff that makes it more powerful, stable etc. but can't avoid being overly large.
Linux surely cannot be bloated. Linux is susposed to have a massive kernel, this is dangerous for a proprietary OS and is avoided. Due to it's open source aspect, people can track down and fix all the problems from it's size. So you get the extra power from a large kernel, without all the hassles. If this is not true, then Linux would not have had an out of control growth cycle... because no one would use it.
As for your browser point, im amazed that you don't know the answer to this question. I certainly do(and im a n00b who can barely use that damn thing), oh might as well brag and show my competence.
In windows 98 and onwards you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer. In Linux you can use a file browser or a net browswer... well in Gnome anyways, I can't remember about KDE. You can uninstall Konquerer and Galeon anyways. Internet Explorer has alot of problems, so this damages the reliability(and security) of the operating system because you MUST use it to browse for files.
You are right in theory, why can Microsoft do one thing, and Linux get away with doing that same thing? That's because double standards aren't always evil, sometimes there is a reason for the standards. If Microsoft gave you the option to uninstall IE and use Windows Explorer, in addition to having an awesome browser(if you MUST be stuck with IE all the time), they would be excused.

whoopdeedoo, windows comes with notepad and some card games. oh yes and minesweeper.
install a 3 CD set of linux mandrake (like i did) and you could conceivably never have to install anything ever again to do everything you ever wanted to do. let's see how far you get with windows if you promise yourself never to install anything else on top of it.
i seriously cannot believe you made this ill informed a comment, zombie356452, and you think i am unjustified when i call you a dumbass?
Calum:
right so let's see.
you have 3 cds full of stuff. these CDs can just hold everything you will ever need, with no room on for anything else.
I have 3 CDs full of stuff. these CDs contain everything i will ever need PLUS shitloads of other stuff PLUS alternative programs for most things (several office suites, severla browsers and so on) and that's my CDs filled up.
Now. think to yourself, which is the more bloated system. The one where you can fit on all the stuff you would need to use, or the one where you could fit on all that AND a bunch of stuff you might want to use but may never have time to because you already have a huge CHOICE of software to pick from.
Give me a CHOICE anyday.
what's wrong with choice anyway? all the windoids i have seen on here recently seem to think choice is a bad thing.
lazygamer:
Screw Mandrake, install all the programs on those 5 disks of Redhat. Now that's what I call nerd heaven!
-Lazygamer, who still can't get over the fact that Redhat 7.3 was stuffed with programs, and suddenly they need 2 more disks(and that second disk is full to the brim to boot!) just to include all the stuff they coulden't include on 3 disks. :D
Calum:
that's your choice. you choose freedom from choice, and i choose freedom of choice.
i choose choice, you choose slavery (which i think is a little ironic).
well i think that unless you have more than one take on any situation, you cannot know any better than to use the one thing you have always used.
this is why two or more desktop managers is a good qidea. this is why having mozilla AND galeon AND netscape AND konqueror installed is a good idea. it's why you might want to try out Kmail AND Evolution and so on. So you can make an informed choice.
By making the CDs you describe yourself, you have already chosen what software to put on there, but say you were to (as mandrake do) put together a 'showcase' CD of your OS that could cater for the needs of almost everybody, not just yourself, you would realistically need to include many different styles of similaq rproducts since people all work differently from each other and need different tools for the same, or similar jobs.
Not all text editors are the same. Not all CD burning GUI programs are the same. All were created because the developers felt that the existing programs could do something better or needed something added.
Now this discussion is pissing in the wind, because you prefer the mainstream bullshit of windows.
myself, i prefer to have a CHOICE. what i choose is not important to anybody but me, but if we don't have a choice, then we may as well not hae a mind.
