Any Ideas?

Hey,
I'm using Mandrake 8.1 on a dual boot with win98.
I have a couple problems that I'm pretty sure are inter-related. Wonder if anyone has a possible solution.
The problems are with every browser (Mozilla 0.9.4, Netscape, Galeon and Konqueror) I am having this problem in Mandrake. Alot of the time I have to click a link or bookmark 3 or 4 times before it will go through. It looks like it is trying but the modem is doing nothing.
Also I can't get download speeds higher than 2k per second (usually alot less) in any of the browsers or in ftp.
Under Windows I use Mozilla 0.9.9 and I don't have the clicking problem or the download problem. I have a dialup connection that will only connect at 28800 max because of these ancient phone lines we have, but I can do 3.6-4.2K per second downloads.
Additionally when both my wife and I are on the net she says her internet speeds run about half as fast when I am using Mandrake as when I am using windows even if I am not using the net. I don't notice any difference in internet speeds between the 2 OS's on my comp. When I can get the click to go through they both work well.
Ok so it seems obvious that something in the mandrake setup is not quite right but I haven't a clue what it could be. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the problem?
Also one thing more I forgot to mention. If I restart my network it will work perfectly for clicks for about half an hour then go back to the repetitive clicks problem. The other problems don't change after a network restart.

When you click on the link/bookmark dit you notice if there was a "Sending Request" type note show up on the status type bar on the bottom of the browser?
This should be followed by a "recieving data" kind of responce from the site.
http is a request response protocol so determinining when the problem occurs will be important...ie does the request go through or not...check network connectivity....vs no response...server problems or timeout.
badkarma:
never trust the download speeds reported by windows .......
If I were to believe them my cable modem could reach speeds in excess of 700kb/sec (which is technically impossible with my given bandwidth)

Hey,
dbl221,
Yes send is going out. I have an external modem and I can watch the lights to see.
What makes it so strange is that when I restart the network, clicking works fine for a little while.
BadKarma,
I don't trust Windows (IE) download speeds either but I use Mozilla and I have checked it with a calculator. It is accurate.

of course, if you are both on the net at the same time, the bandwith is split in half between the two of you...(if you are using the same connection)
