Try to get aumix either by RPM or via apt-get.  If not, build it from source:

SHEESH i have aumix!!!! i have kmix!!! i have the gnome mixer!!!!


the OSS mixer (/dev/mixer) which controls all sound levels on the OSS-compatible sound card driver is maxxed out. All levels are absolutely topped, nothing's muted. There is nothing I can do regarding mixers.
