he model is {400c gateway/serial-0013666689
and the modem did come with the computer.
thanks

voidmain:
According to this it is a U.S. Robitics 56k WinModem (Win as in Windows). I did some searching and from what I can tell there is no support for this modem so if you want to use a modem in Linux you'll have to get one that is supported and not designed to only run in Windows (there are some drivers for some WinModems but only a few, I don't think yours is one of them).

RudeCat7:
Well, "what makes Linux better than Windows?" is a loaded question.  Depends on the user. Since you say you are interested in computers, then perhaps Linux is for you.

I choose Linux for these reasons:

1) Generally speaking, it is free. You do pay for it by spending time learning how to use it, and you do pay for it if you feel like buying manuals. The way I feel about it, you only really pay for it once. Because once you learn how to use it, that's it. If you do have problems, there is free help out there. With people who really want to help. There is always someone somewhere with the same setup you have, that may have already solved the problem. And the funny thing is, that makes it better than Windows is, that the older the equipment gets, the better the support. It's just the opposite with Windows.

I had a support problem a long time ago...The support center's solution "...just use the restore cd..." typical! Yeah, completely reinstall windows and all the other oem software. Great.

2) It is leaner. The equivalent Windows software would not fit on my 10gig partition, while the Linux install has plenty of room to spare. Just compare the size of equivalent software.

3) I'm not using any anti-virus software right now, but my Windows partition always has it running. (I mentioned elsewhere that I have a Windows partition because my wife needs it, she doesn't care that much about computers.)

These are a few of my personal reasons, and I must add, it just works, regardless of what other people say, it is not hard, it's just different, and it works! it does everything I need it to do.

You can try it or not, and for everybody else who is against Linux, just don't use it. If people who love Linux have pissed you off, then sorry, they just really like it and want to share their experience with you, just like you might really like Windows or whatever, but you are coming from two different points of view.

Don't waste your time trying to convert each other.

i'd basically only use Linux for 2 reasons:
-my game and web server
-to look smart

on Windows i've never really had problems playing games or anything...it only crashes when i try to run a game server or if i use certain programs like IE or Kazaa (sometimes).

switching over to Linux might help a bit for a possible job future.... many places are slowly transfering over to Linux because of the lower cost to purchase or get software for.
many games actually have Linux distributions such as Unreal Tournament, Quake2 for sure, Quake3 i'm not quite sure, i heard Wolfenstein has one and Half-Life works through Wine flawlessly. more games are coming for Linux but they don't always hit the market as soon as the Windows ones.

Stryker:
I have never been able to get halflife to work in linux, although I heard winex does the trick (wine is too choppy), anyone have a link to a winex download? I can never find it anymore (except this one place that charges $2).
