How do i sort out my kernel/system?

the only thing that seems to be failing though is the iptables stuff in your boot process. Your modules dont show iptables or ipchains loaded.
So maybe you should try to switch iptables for ipchains do:
chkconfig iptables off
that will turn off the service (so it wont start at boot).
then:
chkconfig ipchains add
chkconfig ipchains on
and do you really have an sis7018 sound card???
Most of the sis sound cards are 7012 which is supported by >= linux 2.4.18

hmm, i thought it was 7018, but maybe it is 7012... it's whatever the integrated sound is in a laptop with a SiS 630 video card. I don't really know if the bits can be mixed and matched or if the SiS sets are always the same as each other...
as for ipchains and iptables, i want them to work, so i'll try that out, but i do not understand thing 1 or thing 2 about them sadly... i am trying to read up on it though.
