Help my n00b @$$ choose another distro
lazygamer:
Well, I liked Libranet, something seemed special about it. But with TWO double whammys, that obscure "improper shutdown" problem, and the wind0ze boot problem(sadly, 2.0 must lack a Lilo option), I've decided to something dreaded and hop distros again!
I don't like Mandrake, well it is probably fine, but I prefer something different. So far I can imagine SUSE and Lycoris desktop LX. Any other's you can think of?
I need:
-No nonsense dual booting
-Excellent out of the box speed(cuz it will be configured in it's default way for quite some time)
-No nonsense after-install stuff. So I should be able to boot right into KDE without any extra effort.
-Newbie friendly, but a GUI is a GUI, so I doubt there is much that can be done in this regard.

Unless Redhat 8.0 is vastly different, im not touching it! Slackware, isn't that susposed to be an advanced distro? Remember im one shutter short of a windoid. ;)

Ex Elven great post. i would also suggest Red Hat 8. Thats what i use now and i have had very few problems. And the problems i have had are probraly caused by not all compatible hardware. So Red Hat 8 or maybe SuSE 8.1 i think is out now. that might be worth checking into. SuSe 8 was very user friendly and i had no problems with it except internet. It is outdated now though so it does not have some nice features like easly changeing the screen resolution like Red Hat 8. So i really suggest Red Hat 8 for user friendly ness but SuSE 8.1 should also be given a try

I just had a bad experience with RH before.
-There is mountains and mountains and mountains of programs to choose to install.
-When I booted, it didn't automatically take me into the GUI, just let me at the horrible command line!
-Windows dual boot didn't work, but that may of been due to not using Lilo. Can't remember what I chose.
Damn, RH7.3 gave me a bad experience, i'd be amazed if RH8 magically became so easy.
This Lycoris looks pretty retard friendly, although it's power flower thang is soooo ghey. Anyone here used Lycoris before? Although if it's like Mandrake, being a little too un-optimized out of the box, then SuSe is probably a better choice.

Lycoris is meant to be easy and good. (although isn't it based around Libranet?). United Linux are meant to out up a good showing too.
