X on a Laptop

cloudstrife:
I have a brand-new hp xt 6050 laptop.  I can get linux (redhat) and freebsd running on it just fine, but no X windows!  Anyone have an idea?

choasforages:
how were you trying to start X on the laptop. what are the specifications on the lcd, like max resolution and colordepth.

cloudstrife:
Here we go:

14.1 inch tft, max res. 1024X768, i dunno colordepth

for some reason, I can get redhat x to run in 640X480 or whatever that res is, but then it always crashes; it doesn't kernel panic, it CRASHES.

So i decided to use Freebsd.  That X doesn't work at all.

i have an intel i830M graphics card.  Intel says it should work fine with x 4.2.0, which is what i am using.

choasforages:
how did you install redhat 7.3, the graphical installers default resolution is 800x600. if the graphical installer worked you can take X up to atleast 800x600
also during the redhat 7.3 install, did you select the autodetected card or did you use a different one

cloudstrife:
I did a text mode install, and i selected the default card.... damn this laptop, when i open a kde menu, it covers the whole screen!
