also,(sorry for all the questions, its almost a faq!) How can i make it so my comp. normally starts in window, and how would I make it get to linux.  Thanks so far!!

Well, when ya install Linux it will have you setup the bootloader. Probably have Linux, Failsafe, and Windows automatically set up. Just be sure to set whichever one you want as default so that after you reboot it will either automatically go to the default, or you can arrow down to tho other OS.

I've never had any problems with Xine.

Yeah but the interface is maddening

It's been a while since I've used mplayer so I'll apt-get install it tonight and have another look.
I also agree that some of the Xine skins come with shoddy UI's but I think some are fine - take LCD for instance.  Maybe it's just something your not used to...
