How do i set the hard drive(on a red hat linix system) to turn off after a certain amount of time of not being used, like energy saver or whatever?

Also, why do network card always not work as soon as you install linux?  In my case, I had a computer with win 98 on it first, and the network card worked fine.  But now I have linux on the computer and it acts like the card is not even there.  It wont even show up on a router or hub.  This has happened to me twice now. What the hell????

3com network card in a dell computer.  I had this same problem with an old gateway some time ago.  I think it had a 3com also.
