I've decided that i will get Solaris 9 for the x86 to run on my PC.

If anyone here is running solaris on their home computer please IM me in aim sometime so that i could talk about it with you.  

I am mostly concerned on what online chatting and internet related applications run well on solaris.  Can i watch DVD movies on solaris ?  DOes solaris network well with mac os x ?

What sort of multimedia applications run well on solaris ?

you need to talk to Uncle Mark the Solaris Guru (Admin). He is working night shifts @ the moment (I'm on days). He will be about tonight after 19:00 (UK Time).

I don't want to run windows on my pc.  I can't get mac os on my pc.  From what i hear redhat linux can be slow and gentoo is in impossible for a noobie to install.


Sun is making solaris.  Solaris is unix.  I would imagine solaris would be a relatively easy operating system to network with mac os.

My suggestion to you is to use Solaris x86 9 With the Gnome desktop... Though there is a new GUI availble direct from sun... Looks a bit like windows 98 ?? Anyway you can use most opensource software on Solaris..

Network, networks to just about anything .... you could use samba for file sharing, but I must admit unless you already have a licensed copy...go Linux it cheaper... Solaris real excels on sparc hardware...not x86
