Upgrade now, or wait?
KernelPanic:
Install KDE or Gnome whatever your preference may be....
Then install a lighter WM like fluxbox and use 'run' to start kicker or whatever the Gnome equivalent is...
Then you have your KDE/Gnome apps with a lighter and quicker WM.
Master of Reality:
just use blackbox.... but redhat wont run X by default in the install. You would have to run startx every time or change the file to start x at starup. I recommend just using BlackBox as it is extremly fast
Calum:
so are you saying that it doesn't need X to run? if so what other desktops don't need X? or are you just saying that it uses a lower overhead than those famous windowsalikes, KDE and GNOME?
Master of Reality:
no it needs X...
It is just a fast gui.
..... maybe it just that you cant use the graphical installer with less than 64 MB of RAM.
Or it maybe that redhat wont configure X for you if you have less than 64 MB of RAM.
voidmain:
Those WMs still require X, however they are MUCH lighter weight than KDE and Gnome. And you can run X and WMs on less than 64MB but the larger ones are going to be really slow. Also there is nothing stopping you from obtaining an older copy of X and WMs that may require less memory. I'm not sure of the difference in memory usage of X v3.x and X v4.x. But KDE 3.x and Gnome 2.x certainly need a lot of memory...
