Solaris

I can give you my review since for the last 5 years I've been administering/managing around 75 Sun servers. I personally like Linux a lot more than Solaris, however Solaris performs much better on Sun hardware (especially on machines with more than 4 processors. I have one machine with 18 processors and several with 10 processors). I do have a couple of old dual processor Sparc20 boxes that I installed Debian Linux on and use for web servers... I wouldn't waste my time with the x86 version of Solaris unless a vendor app requires it or you are using it as a learning tool for larger Sparc boxes.

Thanks VoidMain...I am using it for learning, but I like the review anyway...more than 4 cpu's does seem to be the big dividing line for an OS. More than that and my brain implodes.
AS/400 has typically 200 or more processors...cool eh!
Oh man did I just say eh...I am such a hoser.

Hmmm.. Solaris... similar to Linux but it's even less used, costs money, and there aren't as many programs for it.
But seriously, just get Windows XP direct from Microsoft; it's 80 bucks but you get what you pay for.

similar to unix, not linux. Actually, similar to SunOS, for some reason, am i right? Of course it costs money, oh dear, so does windows as you say yrself, and solaris costs less, free if you own a SPARC, which presumably would run Solaris better anyway, and as to the programs, what are you on about? in this day and age, if there's a C compiler for the OS, you can spend literally years just working your way through the GNU open source stuff! this applies to any OS with decent compilers, including windows, dare i say.

Look dumb fuck. Windows doesn't run on a Sun. Windows only runs (and I use that the term "run" loosely) on puny little shit-tel boxes. Now scram and find some teletubbies to play with. Where the hell are the mods? This is a *UNIX* forum.
And Calum, Sun more or less just switched names several years back from SunOS to Solaris (a little more than that but...). And unlike Microsoft, Sun has the ability to create very good hardware of their OWN innovation and write an operating system to run on that hardware...
