and use ext3 or reiserfs instead of ext2. they are both journaling filesystems which helps a lot if you have a powercut or something.

Another thing you should do is to use gnome window manager instead of KDE. I prefer KDE but it will go really slow on a slow computer.

i'd steer clear of gnome, if kde is sluggish.

i would honestly recommend using windowmaker or xfce which are both mature and stable desktop environments, both of which are much closer on the right side of the bugs and incompatibilities horizon than either kde or gnome are.

plus both consume a tiny fraction of the overhead that gnome or kde use.

Thanx for telling me because , b4 I didnt know wtf gnome window maker and kde were lol yeaa im new to linux, is mandrake hard to install it should boot right up from the cd, can I pop the cd into my pc while runnunig xp and use the FAT32 FS ? or should I boot it from start ? I have never installed Linux b4 sry for the n00b questions
