problems changing login screen

Do you have the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop?
If so try adding the line
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"
to it.

Well presumably you have the file /etc/X11/prefdm? Does that have some reference to xdm in it?

*Go to "Mandrake control center".
*Click on "Hardware".
*Select "Display Manager Chooser"
*Select GDM.

there is no category like that under Hardware..
