All Things Microsoft > Microsoft as a Company
Ballmer admits Linux' TCO is lower than Windows (duh!).
lazygamer:
Yes but the "Heroic" used in this article is not that of a pro-microsoft bias. I believe it's just another way of saying "fucking intense efforts".
tratan:
Here's a nice pdf showing just how stupid Microsoft was to keep up that BS, and how stupid they are to continue to charge so much.
Essentially, this group compared a hypothetical company's technology expenses over a 3-year period using Linux and Windows applications and systems. I had no idea the Windows server OS cost so much!
The hypothetical company payed only $79.95 for a boxed copy of SuSE, versus $282,973.50 for software for it's workstations and server.
One thing... I think they should have gone ahead and bought StarOffice instead of getting OpenOffice free. I don't know if there's any serious functionality difference, but I think companies are more likely to pay for StarOffice in return for the feeling that they're supported by a corporation. It's not like it adds a serious amount to the cost (something like $80, I believe?), Linux is still far cheaper (duh).
lazygamer:
Oh and with all the money you save, that can be put into buying hardware!
voidmain:
Yeah, $282K would buy a fairly nice machine...
lazygamer:
You know how Ballmer keeps making boneheaded statements that harm Microsoft, or make it look bad? Could this be due to him feeling guilty over the horrid thing that Microsoft is?
