Okay, so I have a laptop, its a neat little P133MMX with 48mb of ram.

It was running FreeBSD 5.0.

Anyway, with the PCMCIA network card I had, there was heaps of packet loss, and it took about 60 seconds on lan for a ping to go thru which is completly insane. I tried cables and soon worked out that isnt the problem.

I installed Linux (Red-Hat) and there is no longer a problem.

What the hell could make FreeBSD act like that?

FreeBSD 5.0 is a cutting edge release. Not as much as the CURRENT branch, but it's still relatively unstable. You should either stick with FreeBSD 4.9 or wait for a more mature release. FreeBSD 5.2 is due to be released in mid-January.

Or... I could just run Linux which works fine.

Which is what I will do, well ill give FreeBSD 5.2 a try. I run freebsd 5.0 on a system here anyway, but ill stick with Linux on my laptop.
