so ive decided to make the switch and need some advice. i was on the fence but this forum has pushed me over the edge  ;) .ive read thru the forums and looked at info from several links,linux.org linuxiso. yadda yadda. anyways from what i gather i will probably go with RH8 or SUSE, there are others that im downloading to try out, about 9 total. i figure ill check out what works and what works for me. im sure ill be bugging the hell out everyone with questions in do time (my appologies).
i do have a couple questions to start with, if there are links to tutorials and such that i missed please let me know. i dont want to take up to much of anyone's time.
anyways. question #1 ive noticed that most distros have 1 or 2 cd's, 1 for install and 1 for packages. i noticed the download for RH8 is 5 CD'S?????? 3 are installs and 2 are SRPMS(???? im assuming those are packages)is this distro bloated or just that kick ass?
question #2 once ive found the distro i like is it worth buying it from a retailer? would i get more value from what might be in the packaging?

If you're new to Linux, SuSE, Redhat, or Mandrake are good choices.  Personally I like Red Hat Linux 8 because it is very polished and hassle-free, but you are welcome to try Mandrake or SuSE.  Suse isn't free to my knowledge, however, and furthermore I ran SuSE Linux 8 for a while and found it to be buggy and annoying.  But that's just my opinion.  As for what disks to download, for Red Hat you probably will need the first three but don't worry it's worth it.  You can get by with the first 2 but if you want to install programming tools/ kernel headers/ etc. you will want the 3rd disk.  If you like a distro enough then you can certainly buy the retail version which comes with some nice manuals and sometimes extra programs (like StarOffice)  You'd also be supporting the makers of your distro.  Anyway, whatever you choose I'm sure you'll be happy with it, but if you have problems don't hesitate to post them as we have people here who are very knowlegable about Linux.  Have fun!

The downloaded version comes with OpenOffice 1.0 (it's what StarOffice is based on) and Evolution (a nice email client much like the full blown version of Outlook, but without the viruses).

Actually, yes I can, in fact I am on the toilet right now.    Even if you don't have cat5 in your bathroom like me you can download the PDFs and bring your laptop in and read them off line. If you don't have a laptop you could kill a tree and print them out.

I had a much easier time with Mandrake 9.0 than with Redhat 8.0, if you are new, and don't want to read any manuals, Mandrake might be better than Redhat.  Still Redhat is probably better once you get the hang of things.

Is that before or after you get it installed? To me Mandrake *might* be a little easier to install, but I have always had many more problems after the install with Mandrake. Like for instance, having varying versions of the kernel and mismatched kernel headers on the installation CD in Mandrake 9.0. That is a tell tale sign of sloppy. But it's still far better than Windows.
