sorry bout this. one more question.

i'm using a laptop with RH 7.2 (dell inspiron 4000). when my optical mouse is plugged into the PS/2 port, everything works just fine (both the external mouse and the touchpad), but if I start X without it plugged in, the pointer makes erratic movements and clicks randomly. i originally thought this had something to do with gpm, but I disabled it and it still does the same thing.

forget it, I figured it out.

It is really simple. Ignorant people are too ingnorant about the matter that they fail to recognize their blissness.   :D
Maybe they somehow get a whiff of that dilema on purely irrational level, and that makes them unhappy.   :D    :D    :D

I selected "GlidePointPS/2" as the protocol in my XF86Config-4 file. I got rid of the USB->PS/2 converter and plugged the wheel mouse into the USB port, and added a new InputDevice section and gave it the AlwaysCore option. Both pointing devices work without a hitch now.
