Siplus:
i bought a toshiba laptop yesterday
http://www.geocities.com/siplus01/files/Toshibapage.htm
(first model, 1.5ghz)
and it doesn't run well with XP. i want to install win2k and redhat8, but i need to know if i can find all the drivers (for redhat, i can find them myself for windows 2000) and utilites like the battery monitor and touchpad utility thing.
will redhat auto detect and install these 2 things (likewise, will i have to find them for win2k or will they install b/c it detects it in the laptop?)

My advice is simple. Just go ahead and do it. Just install and find out where you have problems. Then, if you have to, track down the extra drivers if you need them. This is after all the same technique you will use with M$ Windows 2000.
Either that or check the website of your distribution of choice for hardware support, with a toshiba it depends on what proprietary on-board hardware they used this time. There is a reason Toshiba are cheaper than HP.
Just do it man. As for autodetect, if it can it will.
Edit : And please can you edit your link so that it does not disply the entire link (use the URL function) because you are screwing up my display.

You probably won't have any problems with a battery monitor. As for the touchpad utility, you probably won't find what you're looking for if it's made by Toshiba.

If it's a Synaptics Touchpad or Alps Glidepad/Stickpointer (Dell uses the Synaptics I believe, don't know about anyone else) then there is a touchpad utility called "tpconfig" which I use:

There are RPMs for it and Debian packages as well. I use it to turn off all the extra garbage like tap modes and I decrease the sensitivity of the stupid thing..
