my 3 problems
ims27_8:
I'm nearly up and running in mandrake 8.2. Just 3 things:
- how do i burn iso's? I have X-CD-Roast, and i can't work it out. <<<DONE>>>
- Is HardDrake supposted to make the screen go black with a blinking white curser in the top left corner of the screen when you run it? it says "please wait while detecting hardware" then it goes black.
- I can't get sound to work. I have VIA VT8233 onboard sound. How can i install it without using hardDrake? I got some linux drivers on the cd that came with the motherboard, but i got an incorrect kernel version error.
thanks to anyone who can help

I guess the <<DONE>> means you figured out your CD issue?
If not, "cdrecord" is the underlying app that xcdroast uses. I use xcdroast for interactive burning but normally I use a script that I created called "mkcd" that uses cdrecord within it. So from a command line I just "mkcd file.iso" and it burns the ISO. If you have an IDE CD burner you need to use the ide-scsi kernel module to emulate a SCSI CD burner. cdrecord uses SCSI addressing.
See the CD-Writing-HOWTO
for more info.
Sorry I don't have the answers for you on your Mandrake questions, hopefully the Mandrake users can help you out.
Master of Reality:
isnt it mkisofs that creates the images?
Xcdroast is very confusing when trying to make isos with it. Shit, the lights just blinked, powers gonna go out, turnin off computer.

"mkisofs" is used to create the ISO images from a directory structure. "cdrecord" is used to actually write the image to CD.

It sounds like something is causing hardrake to lock-up, I have not had problems, or black screens.
Have you tried the manufacturer's website for new drivers?
Has all your hardware except the sound card been recognised (I would suggest removing it and proving this)?
Can you prove your soundcard has not gone south?
Don't know what to use other than Hardrake at the moment. A Noob to Linux myself really.
