Newbie Hardware: SMC router operability

I don't know what was going on there back at the Lounge, but hang in with us and for us.  We'll be there for you (when we can.)

Problem: full (all packages) RH 8.0 install w/ all protocals checked.  When I have a US Robotics (USR) external modem attached to the router I had problems communicating to web (to be taken up later.)

With USR attached to box and Cat5 from box to router at boot.  Logon to web ok, but Evolution wants to look to router.

With USR attached to box and Cat5 disconnected from router at boot. Logon to web ok and Evolution email ok.

Goal: setup RH 8.0 so that modem is attached to router and web ok and Evolution ok.

I have to get myself up to speed on this, but some   discussion on this will be helpful.

i dont know how experienced you are in Linux... so do you know the IP address of the router?
How is the modem attached to your computer?
