New Linux support policies are ominous
5amYan:
FreeBSD:
once configured...
to upgrade ports (sw packages)
#cvsup -L 2 /your/ports-supfile
will get the latest source deltas for your choice of
STABLE (tested) or CURRENT (TESTING)
and then
#pkgdb -aF
to auto Fix the ports database remove stale deps etc...
then
#portupgrade -ar
will compile and install (even running apps) the latest of all ports automagically
You can also cvsup the latest source for the OS itself and build it from scratch.
Other cool things about FBSD. The testing phase is a lot longer as is the Mean Time Between Releases MTBR. This provides a very stable OS.
For example the latest stable release is 4.7 (as of this writing)and the 4.x release has been around for years. The 5.x system is at 5.0 now and will not be moved to STABLE until prolly 5.2 .
That means that it will be well tested when released and require less support in the first place. I can only imagine what would be possible if the effort had 20% of the man hours and funding that linux gets....
I use it as a desktop too. Native DVD, java, flash...
