Wrong. Linux is just the kernel. When discussing a GNU/Linux system, the discussion is talking about a system running the Linux kernel, along with the GNU tools.

GNU software runs on all Unices. Also, GNU  actually is working on their own implementation of a Unix-like kernel called "Hurd"--work started on it at around the same time as work on Linux did, except Linux emerged much faster, and thus, was adopted as the defaco, more or less.

I'm just telling you that so you won't say "GNU = Linux" around Stallman zealots (who I, BTW, hate)--they'll skin you alive.

Oh come on, you can't bag a man for wanting to be semantically correct, especially given the work he's done for Free Software.  (ooh FS and G/L in one post am I a zealot now?     )

GNU - write a lot of Free Software that all GNU/Linux users use.

Linux - one (albeit very important) piece of software that all GNU/Linux users use.

BSD - write a lot of software used by GNU/Linux and BSD users.  I use a few BSD servers, they use a lot of GNU stuff too.  It's a sharing thing.  

There are philosophical differences between the three groups, any one of them will get pissed off if you confuse them with another group.  (rightfully so IMO)

Unix - the OS (family) GNU, Linux, Mac OSX and BSD are based on / members of.
