by the way, why do you prefix your posts with 'girl needs advice'? (excluding the obvious!)

lol.. I'm glad you asked. I guess I'm just working with the sterotype that girls aren't into computery stuff.  I mean, I want to get into graphic design [haha.. i like pretty things], but I like learning this stuff as well
So, I guess it states that I don't know much about operating systems in general, but I pointed out that I don't like Microsoft, and that I want to use Linux.  So, I need it explained to me in n00b language.

my laptop better not blow up.. can linux do that!?!   :D

[seriously, when my brother was younger he tried to fix the computer by turning some switch at the back to max .. the computer 'blew up' smoke and everything] lol
insurance paid

please forgive any incorrectness in grammar

i am way drunk

Calum:
i knew not much about anything to do with computers till about a year ago, anybody can learn! and i have a whole lot more learning in front of me i can tell you! it's fun though, if you're interested in it...

hm_murdock:
graphic design... and you're not using a Mac?

Linux is great, I love it as much as OS X, but you really oughta have an Apple for graphics.

Sadly, this is more and more common, as people go into colleges that have shitty Dells everywhere because the admins don't know jack shit. They think that they're just as good to learn on, on and the whole idea that "businesses use Windows" disgusts me. A graphic artist who works is "doing business" and most of them don't use Windows.

But hey, big, big round of applause to you, you *are* trying to break away from the monopoly. You just need to break over to the right platform for what you do ;)

Now, back to Calum and his insidious little spies! (I love that)

If you right click on My Computer and click properties it should show you the processor type.

Lycoris is great for a first time Linux user. It's small to download (comparatively) , and you can even play Solitare while it installs.
