freeserve are one i am not sure about, i connect to my flatmate's freeserve service at home using my linux computer, i just got him to tell me his login, password and telno, but recently something happened (well, we all moved house) and i can no longer connect, my flatmate was saying something about he needed to run his freeserve CD again to reconnect? Anyway this boils down to: freeserve provide proper ppp access, but you cannot set up the ppp access unless you run special freeserve software (i wonder if they provide linux/BSD versions?)
I checked their site and they seem to provide a lot of windows help but a search for linux turns up fruitless. Interestingly, both of their sites uses Apache on Solaris.
[edit - i emailed them and asked them, we'll wait and see...]
Now, i realise this was a little off topic, since freeserve are regional however all good ISPs are regional, so let's not have this post of mine derided as a 'flame' shall we? those of us who want to stop public discussion on a public discussion board should go and join the nazi mods over at the windows BS.

I have DSL, for around $40 per month (there are four users so that works out at $10 per month each for the far better service (get that, in this situation DSL is CHEAPER then AOL). If you can try that then do. No where can I find mention of Linux for their service, yet I don't use M$ Windows. And I have not installed any software and I have not called their service support staff. It's all inclusive with Mandrake 8.2.

One of my friends has prodigy. It uses standard PPP so I rigged her Linux box to connect to it with kppp, no problems.

actually thats not true in all those cases. while all those you named do have software that you CAN use.. you dont have to (except on AOL). you can do prodigy, MSN, and earthlink (only one of those 3 ive done personally) with linux.
