Winmodems do not work with Linux.

Almost every PC Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP, etc, use winmodems. Thats a lot of winmodems.

Means linux will have to find a way to get a winmodem to work with linux if they want to become a major player in the desktop arena.

Course, broadband is coming too, but still a good many people are stuck with winmodems.

Noone is "stuck" with a winmodem. I'm using a US Robotics 56K external modem on my system, which I ordered without any sort of modem. The external is a real modem that operates completely independently. These so-called "WinModems" use up system resources to do some of the work that the modem ought to do for itself. Sure, these software modems are cheaper, but just aren't worth it as they slow the processor down. Even worse are those WinModems that use the sound card. They'll screw up audio playback every time. The best thing to do is get a real, hardware modem that'll work with any op-sys.
