Doogee:
Hey my sisters computer has stuffed up and wont boot up. I was wondering if theres some way to get her files out of there (its a win98se box) so we can format it and fix it up. It boots into safe mode but that disables the network driver.

Thanks.

Calum:
what offboard storage does it have? ie does it have a cd burner, does it have a floppy or zip drive, what machine are you attempting to back up the data on?

what i would recommend is to install linux on that machine. if you use mandrake, you can use diskdrake during the install to resize the current windows stuff to the back half of the drive, you can then install mandrake on the first half of the drive and then you will have a fully functional system running on the machine, all you need to do is mount the windows partition somewhere (which mandrake will have done automatically during the install process) and bob's yer uncle, fanny's yer aunt.

what do you think?

Doogee:
Could be an option, ill ask her about it...

RudeCat7:
If you had a spare hard drive, you could just install it and transfer files.

If not (this sucks but...) use pkzip, and transfer those files (hope they're small) to floppy.

I like the Linux install idea best though.   ;)

What I don't understand is why this is in the Linux/UNIX forum?  Maybe you should try http://www.windowsbbs.com/
