Weird X shutdown behavior

Hey asdf, before you go to all of that trouble have you looked at "this" page? http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/?pagename=details&hid=1049
It says that the Dell Inspiron 4000 with your video card is "certified" for RedHat 7.2 which means you should not have this trouble. Also, they have links to the X server and the ati driver (you'll likely have to downgrade X to 4.0.1. Let me know if this helps....

OK, a followup on whats going on:
I posted on the linux-dell-laptops Yahoo! group and I found that pressing Fn+F7 (the 'Font' key on the Inspiron 4000) to switch it into 1400 mode before exiting solves the problem. Seems great for a temporary remedy, but I'm still going to be looking for a more permanent solution.
BTW, downgrading to 4.0.1 still yields the same results. Maybe it's just me...
