Modem Irritation...

Calum:
Right then, i have a problem with my "software" modem. It's a smartlink HAMR V90 Voice modem. It is part of the SiS 630 chipset. I have installed the drivers that i found for linux 2.4.4 and red hat 7.1. Those drivers are not proper smartlink ones i understand, they are backward engineered ones designed to make the modem workable. I am actually running mandrake 8.2.

Now, when i open kppp, and click 'Setup' and then click the 'Modem' tag. I then click the "Query Modem" button to see if the modem will respond, and i see firslty a message saying "Looking for modem", then "sorry, can't open modem". On the terminal it says the following:

quote:
Opener: received OpenLock

Opener: received OpenDevice
error opening modem device !
Opener: received RemoveLock

--- End quote ---

I just thought i'd post to see if anybody can help me decipher this cryptic message. Don't go out of your way, but if you happen to know what this message means, then please tell me.

Thanks a lot!

hoojchoons:
First of all, I'm assuming that you compiled the drivers from source and haven't used a binary package. However, if you used a binary package then you shouldn't expect the driver to work due to different kernel versions.

hoojchoons:
You could also go here. It's a page about the Lucent winmodems which use the Lucent Apollo (ISA) and Mars (PCI) chipsets. Although that's not your case, have a look under the "common problems and solutions" part, for those who build a driver from source. Oh, and about that message you get when kppp queries your modem. It simply means that the modem is locked as is the case with every crippled winmodem, because you're simply missing the appropriate driver. Save yourself the trouble and buy a hardware modem instead   ;)

hoojchoons:
Calum hi, just out of curiosity, did you get your winmodem to work?

Calum:
no, i'm at work, on an iMac, i'll try and exhaust all my possibilities tonight or tomorrow though...

I am seriously thinking of giving in and getting an external modem though  :(  . Not the best thing in the world for a laptop...
