Mandrake as DHCP server...

(1/4) > >>

TheGreatPoo:
Hello all,

I posted this on Void Main's Forum as well but it seems to be down at the moment.

I am trying to set up a Mandrake Linux server to run DHCP for a Windoze machine (soon to be dual boot with Mandrake  :D  ), and a Macintosh (OS 9.1).  I have already hooked everything up and set up (hub, cables, everything).  The mandrake server has all the packages it needs installed including Drakwizard.  Also, the server can access the internet (it's the only computer of the three that can at the moment).

The Problem:  I am trying to set up the DHCP server (because the manual on Mandrake's site says to set this one up before any others), and it appears that the only step involved is setting the IP address range.  Well, I type in the lowest (for instance 192.168.135.101) and the highest (for instance 192.168.135.105) but when I click next, it tells me that the range I specified is incorrect.  I have tried many different combinations of IP addresses to no avail.  Also, neither Mandrake's site, nor the manual I downloaded provide any solution.

This is probably something simple that I am overlooking but then again, this is the first time that I have ever set up a network.  Least I am doing it right by putting Linux as the server!

Thanks in advance and thanks or reading.

If no other step is involved, then either you use wrong addresses, or your server doesn't detect the other computers.

Have you tried a broader address range (ie. 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255)? If you try this, at least you'll eliminate the possibility of a wrong ip address. I think the ip of server should always be 192.168.0.1 or perhaps in your case 192.168.135.1 .

Try to ping the address of your Windows machine on your server to see if it's detected. That would surprise me, though, because Mandrake 9.1 is supposed to use Rendezvous (perhaps called Zeroonf).

Refalm:
My range is 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.104 and that worked pretty darn well...

TheGreatPoo:
Yup, I've tried a broarder IP range still with no success.  How do I know if the server detects the other computers?  I have them turned on.

I have the network config for eth1 (eth0 is connected to the cable modem) set up as a static IP.  Should I change this?  What other configs do I need to check?

Sorry bout the n00b questions but I am in fact a n00b b00b.  :D

KernelPanic:
Have you got the correct subnet mask? Using 192.168.x.x private IP's will only work on a class C subnet of 255.255.255.0 (well, there's more to it than that but as far as you are concered use 255.255.255.0)
