Safari: Apple must have donw something right

500.000 downloads is one thing that says Apple did something right. According to Apple 10 % of all Mac OS X users have downloaded Safari since its release.

Apple have proven with Safari and Darwin that they play fair when they start a project based on Open Source code. Furthermore, the fact that Apple's software engineers starting sharing Safari's code modifications and bug fixes with KDE's team from the day Safari was released, is also a sign of good will on both parties and definitely a step forward for the Open Source community. I don't know about you, but that's certainly good news to me.

I agree that it is a step forward, but I feel it is  a step forward more for the company who was previously totally proprietary than for the open source community. Sure they may add enhancements to the code, but that's what open source is all about. I just hope they give due credit in the "About" boxes (if they exist). Maybe you could verify this for me...

Looks to be good news all the way around. Hopefully more companies will follow suit (well, we know one company who will not).

I'll check that later, when I re-download Safari and I'll get back on that. I had to uninstall the previous version due to the known problems which have been, hopefully, solved in the new version. All in all however, I think that it's good news and I sure hope it stays that way.

They don't have any acknowledgments in the "About Safari" box but if you go digging around there is a acknowledgments file.  Here is a copy of it...

Yep, proper credit is given in the Acknowledgments section in the Help menu. I've uploaded the Acknowledgments.rtf file for anybody to download here.
[edit]oops. trc3 got there first. Anyway, if you want to download it, it's still there.    [/edit]

Excellent. I think the only company left who isn't playing is Microsoft. But that's no surprise...

bill gates probably wants every thing to be open source, but no uppermanagement or engineers want to becuase they are ashamed of the work they have done......

You will NEVER see a M$ product with the GPL anywhere in its documentation.

Bill: Lets GPL MS Windows.

Advisor: Lets not. People will laugh at us and no one will use Windows anymore!

Bill: I thought you said the FSF hippies were just jealous of our talking Visual Basic monkey that doubled as a developer...
