macs are almost the most upradable machines made/*well x86 and ppc is the only things i have played with so i wouldn't know*/, you can take a mac that is like 5-6 years old and put a modern processer in it. like my powerbook that started out at 117mhz can go all the way up to 466, try that with a pc and no upgrading. and for upgrading laptops, never tried it/*the thinkpad is needed for schoolwork*/ though im sure it is possible.
x86: a hack on a hack of a hackway
alpha, hewlett packed it A-way
ppc: the fruity way
mips: the graphical way
sparc: the sunny way

Most laptops are horribly expensive to upgrade. The Mac just lets you drop in a new processor or an upgrade card and you're off. Whoever tells you that the Mac isn't upgradable is full of shit. Well, some of the modular Macs (iMacs, for example) are not upgradable, but the tower ones (the ones that anyone who knows their shit will be running), are.
