The Wierdest Thing Ever
« on: 12 October 2003, 23:17 »
Well, today something really strange happened on one of my older macs. I was using a 5500/225 with Mac OS 9.1 making a web page (since I'm trying to learn how to write HTML). After a while it starts freezing all the time. Whenever I open an application or do something. The next day it's doing the same thing, so I try zapping the P-RAM and opening Disk First Aid. After fixing a few problems with the disk, there are still two problems that won't go away. This is what the log says.

quote:
Checking disk "Drive".
Checking "Mac OS Standard" volume structures.
Checking wrapper System file.
Checking "Mac OS Extended" volume structures.
Checking for locked volume name.
Checking extent BTree.
Checking extent file.
Checking Catalog BTree.
Checking Catalog file.
Problem: Mountcheck found minor errors.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Problem: Invalid folume file count, 2, 1201
Checking volume bit map.
Checking volume info.
Repairing the disk.
The volume "Drive" was repaired successfully.

Except the drive isn't actually repaired and it keeps freezing. Plus I don't have any other repair utilities. Should I go and find a boot disk and fix it with that? Any ideas?

Yeah, I guess that I'll do that. It's just that I got the computer second hand and it might take a while to go find an OS 9 disc. Thanks.

Definitely sounds like a job for Disk Warrior. It's saved my HD many times when nothing else would work.
It's well worth the investment. Even if you get the old OS9 version, it will repair and OS X directory.
