Italy is barely bigger than UK, and the Romans had an empire roughly the size of Europe. France could fit three times in my province, and they took over Europe under the reign of Napoleon. Same thing for Germany, who did it THREE times, with the Hansa League, Wilhelm II and Adolf Hitler.
