AMD or Intel?
gump420:
I used to run a Duron (right up until a friend managed to fry my Socket A board).
I didn't really notice any problems with the Duron; I even put it to the test with some heavy-duty 3D games such as Descent3, and it performed quite nicely (and with only PC100 Ram and an outdated video card, to boot).
I would recommend an Athlon, but a Duron is a nice cheap alternative that also overclocks quite nicely.

Not only is it really stinking fast, But it does
everything faster that a dual 1.7 Ghz Xeon. hehe.
Really now, Think "WinTel". The 760MP chipset it
the most stable motherboard, cpu combo I've ever
used.

I have a question, would an AMD fit into a motherboard built for PIII or Celerons? (sorry, I don't know a lot about motherboards/processors and therefore don't know precisely what to look for)

Generally not, in fact generally you can't use two different AMD architectures on the same board, or two different Intel architectures on the same board. You need to go to the manufacturers web site and find your board and see what processors that particular board supports, and if the clock speeds are different you'll likely have to at least change the jumpers on the board to match the CPU. Usually if you upgrade you will want to change the CPU, Motherboard, and memory all at the same time. http://www.tomshardware.com/ has a lot of CPU/Motherboard info.
