As far as I can tell, Linux beats BSD for use on desktops/home systems (marginally), but for pretty much the same reason, BSD is (marginally) more powerfull for servers.
Not that it makes sense to argue about it - if you like BSD, use it, same with Linux. THAT is what free software is about, remember?
I don't really know where Apple stands on the issue, no experience and all. AFAIK it does at least a good job on both issues.
Besides, the average Free Software dude does NOT hate Apple, and certainly not Apple users. The only reason they dislike Apple is AFAIK that it is mostly proprietary, but Apples way of doing that isn't *too* bad. Besides, Apple hardware tends to kick x86's ass.
